Well, my plans for updating throughout the con didn't pan out the way I thought. I haven't decided yet whether it was because I was doing more running around at the con this year, because I was not feeling well, or some naughty third factor that I haven't figured out yet! In any case, here are a couple more photos to keep you going.
(My digicam didn't seem to like the lighting in main programming-- the flash made the photos too dark and mostly un-photoshopable, no flash made everything blurry. Thus no photos from "in the room" from me. Fortunately, a number of other people took photos in main programming that actually turned out, so you'll get to see their handiwork when I get the full photo page up.)
Until then, though....
( At the Thursday night reception.... )
( Sunday evening.... )
( My geeky moment.... )
And now that I've got these photos up, I had best go tell people that I've updated the CT site for 2005....
p.s. My cold is finally getting better. The pinkeye has all but gone away, and my voice finally returned to its proper timbre on Saturday.Current Mood: satisfied

Yeah, yeah, only a daily update at this convention. For some reason, this year I was around and around and around, and not supervising things from behind the tech booth (aka "knitting something"). Sure the hotel is more spread out than the Sheraton, but I had an assistant (for once) who I used to be my eyes downstairs (as it were). I also haven't been on stage nearly so much as usual-- which I didn't realise it until someone pointed it out to me. In part, it's because my cold has lingered in my voice and I find it difficult to talk.
But enough about me. You really want to read about the convention.
We've had a lovely time, this weekend-- the guests, the staff, and the attendees are in compleat agreement. Peter Purves has said at several panels that he thinks that CT is the best-run convention he's ever been at. He's a really great guy, very friendly and personable. We were able to give him the gift of realisation yesterday during the Live Commentary. He had a very poor opinion previously of his performance in "The Gunfighters," in part relying on some 40 year old memories of being uncomfortable as an actor with the script. After seeing the episode, though, he concluded that the discomfort he was displaying onscreen was consistant w/ what the character would be feeling, and wasn't just a reflection of what he as an actor was feeling.
The only big difficulties we've had this weekend have been hotel logistics and tech problems. The tech issues have been plaguing us all weekend, and today is no different. Logistics problems have all stemmed from my not being that familiar with the rooms here at the Radisson Wyndham. Many of the rooms, despite being similar in size to rooms at our old hotel, are actually smaller. Still, we managed to adjust things after the first day, and know better in the future should we return.
Service around this place is slow, though. In the restuarant, in the bar, at the front desk, and behind-the-scenes, too. I'm less than impressed. Also, although being nearer to the airport and the city is good for people getting to the convention, it's also good for people leaving the convention, so night life around the convention has been non-existant. :(
Oh, dear, rambling at this point. Also, I want to post before the end of the Big Finish panel, to ease the transition.Current Mood: tired

Tbe rest of yesterday went swimmingly. Opening Ceremonies was packed. All the better to pull my little joke on the attendees....
( Here's the joke, if you really want to know.... )
The Master's Wild went well, although some technical glitches kept it going far longer than it really should have. Friday Night Film Fest went over well, too, in part thanks to my husband driving out a disc that had arrived in the mail at home yesterday morning.
By the time I had gotten out of the Film Fest, though, the Outpost Gallifrey social had disbanded. Grumble! So, since I still have a crap cold, I decided to go to bed instead. Woo-hoo!
So far this morning, we've had Big Finish photos (including Paul McGann), plus a panel on DW Spin-offs. In alternate progamming right now is a preview of Shaun Lyon's "Back to the Vortex" book. All in all, things seem mostly going smoothly. Hooray!
I'll try to update in the afternoon. |

I have been trying since last night to update, but either been too w/o WiFi or too busy. I get pulled in lots of lovely directions during the course of the convention, which means that something I plan on doing at, oh, say, 9 a.m. doesn't actually happen until, oh, now.
So, the con is going well so far, for the most part. It's turned out that the room where the photographs and autographs are taking place in is much too small for photographs and autographs to happen in, so we'll be adjusting location for the tomorrow and Sunday. (The joys of a new hotel!)
We tried something new to start the con-- a pep rally kind of thingie-- and it came off really well. It was basically extensive promos for some lesser-known events happening at the convention combined with a couple rounds of "Who, Lose, or Draw" and a 20-second-what-I-love-or-hate-about-the-new-series.
Peter Purves is about to come off the stage, so I'm going to post then get back to work. |

I am connected to the Internet as I sit outside Main Programming at the hotel. This is way cool. The reception outside Main Programming is "excellent", inside it's "very good." Woo-hoo! So far, I've seen Stewart Bevan, although I understand Yee Jee Tso is here (but not here), and the Big Finish people are in the process of checking into their rooms.
Main Programming itself is about halfway set up. The lights are being put up even as I type-- I can tell how much that thrills you, yeah.
Anyway, the connection works, and that's all I was interested in finding out, so I'm going to pop out for Thanksgiving Dinner.....Current Mood: hungry

Hoo-boy, not a day to be outside at all. Check out what it looks like outside my carport:

It be snowing. And be blowing, and be chil-ly, to boot. Ugh! Hope the weather now doesn't bode badly for the weekend....
Well, back to work for me! Especially now that I know posting photos from my laptop does in fact work....

Important things to know, this close to the convention:
1) If you still haven't made hotel reservations, you can do so still at the convention rate-- but you have to call the local number for the Wyndham (1-847-297-1234) to get it. The rate will be available at the local number as long as the hotel has rooms to let.
2) Remember to say you're with Chicago TARDIS when you park, so you get the free rate.
3) Yahoo! Maps is the only online map I've found that actually places the hotel in the right location. Both the map accessable from the hotel website and Mapquest has things way wrong.

| » Background and an Online Map Warning |
Jennifer writes....
Well, this is the second year in a row I've attempted to do a blog for the convention. Last year amounted to two-- count 'em-- two entries, which I have just finished dumping. They were bor-ring! This year, I'm thinking that blogging updates this close to the con (and during the con) will be much more efficient than trying to email the list or remembering to post on Outpost Gallifrey. I never know what computer I'm going to be on these days. Usually it's the laptop, which is a beauty, but plays havoc with my email.
In theory, since the hotel has a wireless broadband connection, and since my laptop has built-in wireless ability, and since I have a digicam, I can post photos throughout the con proper. (Surprisingly enough, I'm not actually that busy during panels. I'm really busy during transistions, and at the start and end of panels.)
Right. Enough rambling.
Online Map Warning
I noted just now, while trying to find a map to liberate for the food/store guide, that both the interactive map on the hotel site and Mapquest has the hotel location dead wrong. The hotel site map has the hotel on airport property. The Mapquest map has the hotel where the Ramada-the-O'Hare-Inn actually is. Please note that the Wyndham is north of the I-90 underpass, not south. (Mapquest at least has the location of the Allstate Arena right. The Wyndham is directly south of the Arena, but before you go under I-90.)
